Tarzan M.D. – King of the Healthcare Jungle – Episode 02

Before we needed healthcare reform… before Joint Commission (you know, the Good Ole Days)… before the FDA… before insurance companies… there was one physician to lead us through the healthcare jungle – Tarzan, M.D. (and soon to be introduced, Jane DO). In Episode 2, we find him offering smoking cessation advice. Those twigs kinda smell funny, give the patient the munchies, and do wonders for his glaucoma. Healthcare comics - Tarzan MD funny smoking cessation advice

Catheter Related Infections A Problem? – WTF?

Here’s a novel idea…

Why don’t you try to reduce hospital acquired infections with campaigns that actually work?

Too often, hospitals and healthcare organizations just pump out generic posters, corny phrases on stickers, and plant some “champions” among us to try to motivate us. But generic messages only add to the Sign Fatigue we all experience. (Kind of like those annoying banner ads on web pages. After a while, we don’t even see them anymore.) Plus, we’re always a little cautious… can’t be too racey… can’t be too controversial… don’t wanna rock the boat… what would marketing say? or worse, what would legal say?

Well, sometimes you just have to say, “WTF?” (Why The Foley?)

Pay for Performance (funny pic)

Medical humor can sometimes tick people off, even if it rings true. Take this funny pay for performance commentary on the state of nephrology, for example… Funny P4P pay for performance sign

Medical Humor to Reduce Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI)?

Hospital acquired infection, healthcare associated infection… the name keeps changing, but who cares what we call it (as long as we keep the abbreviation the same – HAI – for the sake of The Literature and all of these signs we’ve made).

Healthcare associated infection is, of course, a huge concern. Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), catheter-associated infections (central lines, Foleys, etc), C. diff, MRSA, and many others (here’s a HAI list from the CDC).

At GiggleMed.com, we applaud the efforts of Kimberly-Clark Corporation in creating the HAI Watchdog Community (but not so much in the sturdiness of the Scott toilet paper my wife bought in bulk from Sam’s… that’s a gripe for another day) as it seems to be one of the better efforts at reducing such infections without instilling fear in the masses that we’re being invaded.

But of course, we think one of the best ways to educate people and influence them to change for the better, is through humor. So naturally, we changed some o...

Funny Pic – Unintended Consequences of Dumping Expired Bowel Prep

This bench sits in front of a hospital, right next to the GI lab. This happens to be the bench by the drop-off and pick up site for elderly patients too.

Quite naturally, I blame the Joint Commission. After all, they’re the ones who make us toss our expired GoLytely. The stuff still works… here’s proof:

Funny Hospital Cartoon – The Doctor Explains the Reality of the 1st 20 Minutes

'Hospital

The scary part about this medical humor cartoon is that someone really said it to a patient. It was a joke, of course… but it was entirely true, too.

Medical Humor: Santa Not The Picture Of Health

As with most journalism, for the moment, we’re all gonna have to say “Screw HIPAA”… GiggleMed.com has come across some disturbing medical records from one of the world’s most well-known personalities:

Medical Humor at Santa's Expense

Let’s take a look to see some of the highlights (er, lowlights) from this man’s medical profile.

Obesity: January 3rd, 2001, Kris Kringle (his alias, I suppose) went to see his PCP, Dr. Klump, and is told he needs to lose at least fifty pounds to be within a safe weight range.

Diabetes: December 20th, 2004, Dr. Klump runs some tests and determines that Kris has very high blood sugar levels. The doctor urges him to be good this holiday season, and not indulge on snacks loaded with carbohydrates. On December 26th, 2004, Kris was admitted to the hospital after a night of cookie eating, complaining of dizziness.

Sleep Apnea: Mrs. Kringle calls Dr. Klump on March 15th, 2005 and asks what can be done about her husband’s snoring, as it worsens in his ‘off-season’. She noticed that during t...

Healthcare Professional Hypochondriasis Exacerbated By “Cute” Doodles

Funny medical art - Not so cute when I saw all of the disorders she labeled me with

So… my daughter has a very cute habit of drawing pictures and leaving them on my desk for when I get home. Very cute… until lately… when I started to see all of the medical disorders these renditions of Daddy had embedded in them.

Like this one (above)… It’s cute… it’s funny… until you see that (a) I’m obese, (b) I have a DVT, (c) I have a right facial droop, (d) probable sleep apnea, and (e) a frozen shoulder. Oh… and I probably have gas.

Yeesh… kids these days. I blame the internet.
